What Is Women for Sustainable Technologies?
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education about issues of sustainability, promoting women’s involvement in sustainable technologies, and encouraging the development of sustainable communities. Women for Sustainable Technologies (WST) includes women and men from diverse backgrounds. We are architects and engineers, mothers and fathers, agronomists, educators, social scientists, hydrologists, gardeners, bee-keepers, anthropologists, business people, community organizers, house-stewards and voters. What we have in common is a concern for sustainability on a local and global scale, and a conviction that women, who are currently under-represented in science and technology, have a significant role to play in creating a sustainable future for us all.
Why We Put Women First
Recognizing the under-representation of women in science, technology, and public policy making, we encourage women to learn about sustainable technologies and model women with careers in the field. With our awareness of discrimination, we are committed to not participate in it ourselves. Many men are active in WST, and we encourage both men and women to work with us in our efforts to build sustainable communities for us all.
What are WST’s Goals?
* To educate women and girls in the adoption, development, support and maintenance of sustainable technologies. This includes encouraging women and girls to study technologies in school and to build careers rooted in sustainable value systems.
* To identify, role model, and support women making contributions in the field of sustainable technology.
* To foster and exchange ideas and information about the long-term sustainability of communities.
* To encourage the development of sustainable communities, through development and use of sustainable technologies and practices, and through the influence of public policy making.
How Will We Accomplish These Goals?
* Organize an annual conference with educational, resource and networking opportunities.
* Offer workshops, field-trips and hands-on training on sustainable technologies and practices.
* Provide a network for communication and mentoring opportunities.
* Offer a speaker referral service.
* Maintain links to high schools, colleges and universities.
Why Should I Become a Member?
Your membership will help expand a young organization devoted to teaching women and men new ways of thinking and living, and to creating sustainable communities. Your membership also entitles you to benefits, including a quarterly newsletter with information, free or discounted advertising opportunities, and a calendar of sustainability-related events; discounts to our conference and other activities; and networking that increases in direct proportion to your involvement. As a young organization, we are still building ourselves. We encourage you to help shape WST. Welcome!
